The Colonial Pennsylvania Plantation was founded in 1973 by a team of individuals deeply interested in preserving the lifeways, crafts and skills of colonial Pennsylvanians. We continue today to educate visitors about a way of life that is slowly being forgotten. Our mission is to educate, but our wish is to inspire--to inspire creativity, a love of nature, an appreciation for hard work, and the joy of working as a team to ensure success and survival. We are not a museum of objects, but of discovery. At our site, visitors learn about the lives of colonial farm families by doing the tasks that they did--spinning, blacksmithing, caring for animals, sowing and harvesting crops, and more.
We are able to maintain our place in the local and historical community through the generous contributions of our members, our donors, and our volunteers.
Unless otherwise stated, all donations will be used for our general operating costs, which include utilities, maintenance, insurance, restoration, salaries and other high costs of running a historic site.
Periodically the Plantation will request the support of our community toward a particular project. In 2017 and 2018 our project will be our "Founder's Pavilion," which will provide cover from the elements for over 8,000 school students that visit us throughout the year. This will also provide us with an event space for birthday parties, scout groups, concerts, and special crafts and activities that we present. Right now EVERY event and activity that we host is subject to the weather--the slightest bit of rain can ruin an event. With a pavilion, we can have a space that we can rely on, even in inclement weather.
Donors to the Founder\'s Pavilion fund at the $200.00 level will receive a plaque permanently affixed to the structure. We are in the process of designing an historically accurate plan for the pavilion and getting bids on the project. The image to the right is from Colonial Williamsburg's Market Shed and is in many ways similar to the concept that we have.
If you wish to contribute toward the Founder's Pavilion, please designate so in the comment section of the donation page below.
