Soaring at Sunset
Join the Colonial Pennsylvania Plantation for a sunset fundraiser featuring tethered hot air balloon rides, live music, food trucks, wine and beer garden, historical demonstrations and fun and games for the whole family!
The first untethered manned hot air balloon flight was performed by Jean-François Pilâtre de Rozier and François Laurent d'Arlandes on November 21, 1783, in Paris, France, in a balloon created by the Montgolfier brothers. Inspired by their achievement, an American innkeeper named Peter Carnes—without any knowledge of ballooning, and based only on newspaper descriptions—built his own hot air balloon. On July 19, 1784, he launched his balloon at the Walnut Street Prison in Philadelphia. On Friday, July 19, 2019, we will honor Peter Carnes and his French predecessors with Soaring at Sunset.
Soaring at Sunset will feature a Wine and Beer Garden, Food Trucks, Live Music from bluegrass buskers The Cheddar Boys, an exhibit about the history of hot air ballooning, and demonstrations of silk dyeing and balloon decorating. General Admission tickets include all of the above; tickets to fly in the hot air balloon will be $20 and available only at the event. Balloon flights are weather dependent.
Feel free to bring chairs or blankets. Please support our food truck vendors by not bringing outside food to the event. NO PETS. As this is a fundraiser, no special passes, discounts, library memberships, or comp tickets will be accepted.
